Barcelona reach deal with De Jong over new contract
BARCELONA – Barcelona have reached an agreement with Frenkie de Jong’s agent on a contract renewal that will keep the Dutch midfielder at the club for a further three seasons, local media reported on Thursday.
The deal, first revealed by Mundo Deportivo, includes a reduction in De Jong’s salary, which had long been a sticking point in negotiations and a source of speculation over his future at Camp Nou. His current contract was due to expire in 2026.
De Jong, 27, has repeatedly been linked with an exit in recent transfer windows amid reports the club were keen to offload him because of his high wages. The former Ajax player hit out at the press last season before a Champions League tie against Napoli, accusing them of trying to push him out.
Instead, the Netherlands international appears set to extend his stay under coach Hansi Flick, who considers him a vital part of the squad. De Jong has started four of Barcelona’s five matches this season, missing only the heavy win against Valencia through injury.
The renewal marks the end of a long-running saga and gives Barcelona stability in midfield at a time when the club is balancing sporting ambition with financial pressures.
