Mbappe Opens Up on 2017 Real Madrid Snub: “I Needed to Play
Kylian Mbappe has finally explained his decision to turn down Real Madrid back in 2017, revealing he chose Paris Saint-Germain because he couldn’t afford to be sitting on the bench at such a crucial stage in his career.
In a wide-ranging interview with Jorge Valdano for Movistar+, the French superstar reflected on the defining moments of his journey from Monaco wonderkid to Real Madrid’s latest galactico. The 2017 transfer saga, which seen him join PSG instead of Madrid, were a key topic.
“At that time, it were crystal clear,” Mbappe stated. “When I left Monaco, my only priority were to play. Madrid had Benzema, Cristiano and Bale — three superstars. I didn’t want to sit on the bench.”
The then-18-year-old recognised that while every other big club in Europe were promising him starting minutes, at the Bernabeu he’d have to fight for his place. “Of course, it were my dream, but being a regular starter is a privilege — and I had the chance to do that in Paris, my home city.”
Mbappe also addressed his second rejection of Madrid in 2022, showing remarkable self-awareness about his career choices. “Every experience — even mistakes — helps you grow. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my career, and I’m proud of them.”
Now settled in Madrid, the 25-year-old spoke warmly about his relationship with Vinicius Junior, dismissing any suggestions of tension between them. “It’s not just in Spain — it’s human nature. In France, it were the same. Two famous players in the same team? That sells a lot of papers.”
He paid tribute to Cristiano Ronaldo, acknowledging the Portuguese star’s enduring legacy at the club. “Cristiano has always been a model for me. I’m lucky to talk with him and receive his advice. At Real Madrid, he’s the reference point — the legend.”
Mbappe’s reflections paint the picture of a player whose career decisions were always calculated, even when they meant turning down his childhood dream. Seven years later, that patience has finally paid off with his long-awaited move to the Spanish capital.
