Rangers manager hunt goes on as Röhl withdraws
Rangers’ search for a new manager intensified on Thursday following the withdrawal of Danny Röhl from contention. The 36-year-old German, who was among the front-runners to replace Russell Martin, opted not to pursue the Ibrox role, leaving former Rangers defender Kevin Muscat as the favored candidate to take over the Scottish Premiership club.
Röhl, formerly Sheffield Wednesday’s manager, had impressed Rangers’ hierarchy during recent negotiations, bringing experience as an assistant at RB Leipzig, Bayern Munich, and the Germany national team. He guided Sheffield Wednesday out of relegation danger in the 2023-24 Championship season and secured a mid-table finish before departing the club in July. Despite these credentials, the German coach has declined the opportunity to return to management at Rangers.
That development appears to strengthen Muscat’s prospects. The 52-year-old Australian, currently managing Shanghai Port in the Chinese Super League, has reportedly held discussions with the club. Muscat led Shanghai Port to the CSL title in 2024 and is positioned well to secure further success this season, with the campaign concluding on November 22. His managerial track record also includes league titles with Melbourne Victory in Australia and Yokohama F Marinos in Japan.
Muscat’s strong ties to Rangers include his role in their 2003 domestic treble-winning squad, his only season as a player at Ibrox. His tactical approach emphasizes disciplined defensive organization and high pressing, qualities Rangers aim to reinstate following recent inconsistent performances.
In the interim, speculation suggests Rangers may appoint former player Neil McCann to oversee the team until Muscat is available to take charge. McCann’s familiarity with the club’s culture and current squad could provide continuity during the transition.
Meanwhile, no talks have resumed with Steven Gerrard, who ruled out returning for a second spell as Rangers manager. The former Liverpool captain withdrew from the running over the weekend, leaving the club focused on internal alternatives.
Rangers currently sit eighth in the Scottish Premiership, trailing leaders Hearts by 11 points and Celtic by nine, after seven matches. The club resumes its campaign following the international break with a home fixture against Dundee United on Saturday.
Muscat’s appointment would mark a strategic shift, reflecting Rangers’ intent to blend experienced leadership with a proven winning mentality in both domestic and international competitions. For the Australian, the move offers a chance to rebuild the legacy he briefly forged as a player, now translating success into management on one of Scotland’s biggest stages.
