Bruno Fernandes Says Ronaldo “Knows He Made a Mistake” After Costly Red Card in Portugal’s Defeat

Bruno Fernandes said on Saturday that Cristiano Ronaldo accepts responsibility for the red card he received in Portugal’s 2-0 loss to Ireland, a dismissal that will keep him out of Sunday’s decisive World Cup qualifier against Armenia. Portugal, top of Group F with 10 points, must win to secure direct qualification for the 2026 tournament.

Speaking at a press conference, Fernandes said Ronaldo’s actions were the product of frustration after a difficult night in Dublin. “The heat of the match, the frustration of not getting a positive result — these things happen in football,” the midfielder said. “Cristiano had a reaction that cost him dearly. He knows it wasn’t something he intended to do, but it happened. He knows he made a mistake and, unfortunately, he won’t be able to help us on Sunday.”

Ronaldo, chasing a record sixth World Cup appearance, was sent off after a VAR review for elbowing an opponent inside the box. His absence adds pressure to Portugal’s home match against already-eliminated Armenia, a fixture that remains crucial for Roberto Martínez’s side after their setback against Ireland.

Fernandes acknowledged Portugal’s shortcomings in that defeat, particularly in their buildup play. “It didn’t go the way we wanted,” he said. “We created few chances because we had few players in the final third. Our build-up was deep and slow, which suited Ireland’s defence. We needed to be more strategic in moving the ball.”

Looking ahead, the Manchester United midfielder stressed the need to return to winning form. “What we have to do is win, because this team is used to winning and must continue like this,” he said. He warned that Armenia, despite being out of contention, still pose a threat. “We’ve faced them before. They are quick in attack, have quality in midfield, and play aggressively. We know the difficulties they can cause.”

Even with inconsistent recent performances, Fernandes insisted Portugal’s ambition remains unchanged. “Nothing changes our goal of wanting to win the World Cup,” he said.
