All the 2025 Puskas and Marta Award nominee goals
MANCHESTER, England – FIFA on Tuesday released the 2025 Puskas and Marta Award shortlists, confirming 22 nominees—11 men and 11 women—for the annual honors recognizing the best goals scored worldwide between Aug. 11, 2024, and Aug. 2, 2025. The winners will be announced at The Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony in Switzerland next January, with voting split evenly between fans and a FIFA expert panel.
The Puskas Award, traditionally open to goals scored across the men’s and women’s game, is now complemented by the Marta Award, introduced in 2024 and won in its inaugural edition by Brazilian legend Marta. The 39-year-old forward is again among the contenders after another standout campaign with the Orlando Pride.
The men’s shortlist features a diverse range of scorers from domestic leagues and international competitions, including Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal, Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice and Independiente’s Santiago Montiel. Rice’s nomination comes after his long-range free kick against Real Madrid in the Champions League quarterfinals—one of the highest-profile goals among this year’s entries.
Several nominees arrive via spectacular improvisation or individual brilliance. Montiel’s 25-yard overhead kick for Independiente, Lucas Ribeiro’s solo run from his own half for Mamelodi Sundowns against Borussia Dortmund, and Rizky Ridho’s halfway-line strike for Persija Jakarta highlight the variety of techniques represented. The list also includes goals from Brazil’s Serie A, MLS, the Egyptian Capital Cup, and the Turkish Super Lig.
On the women’s side, the Marta Award shortlist mixes established stars and emerging talents. Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey is nominated for her long-range finish against Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals, while Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema is recognized for the goal that marked her 100th international strike. USA forward Ally Sentnor and Australia’s Kyra Cooney-Cross are also featured for powerful efforts scored from a distance.
Marta’s own nomination comes from a solo run in the NWSL playoffs, where she dribbled past multiple defenders and the goalkeeper before finishing into an empty net. Other contenders include Lizbeth Ovalle’s inventive volley for Tigres—a goal that went viral for its acrobatic technique—and Brentford’s Ashley Cheatley, whose juggling control and acrobatic finish lit up a Women’s FA Cup tie.
The nominations reflect FIFA’s continued push to highlight goals from a broad spread of competitions, with entries from the Women’s U20 World Cup, Liga MX Femenil, NWSL, Serie A, and the Leagues Cup. Last year’s Puskas Award went to Alejandro Garnacho for his overhead kick against Everton, marking the fifth Premier League winner in the past eight years, though FIFA’s selections this year again demonstrate a global reach.
The winners of the 2025 editions will not only enter FIFA’s record books but may also help define the attacking identities of their respective eras. For younger players such as Yamal and Sentnor, a win could accelerate their rise on the world stage, while another triumph for Marta would further cement her legacy as one of football’s most celebrated figures.
