Lucas Paquetá hits out at FA after Liverpool red card: ‘Ridiculous’

LONDON – West Ham United midfielder Lucas Paquetá criticized the Football Association after being sent off in Sunday’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Liverpool, calling the incident a reflection of “two years” of challenges following an FA investigation into alleged betting breaches.

Paquetá, 27, received two yellow cards for dissent in the second half from referee Darren England. The Brazil international later posted on social media accusing the FA of failing to provide psychological support during the period in which he faced four spot-fixing charges. Paquetá was cleared of those allegations earlier this year following a lengthy inquiry into bookings he received between November 2022 and August 2023.

In a statement on X, Paquetá said it was “ridiculous to have your life and career affected for two years without any psychological support from the federation,” adding that his reaction on the pitch was a consequence of the pressure he had endured. He apologized to supporters and teammates but said the process had taken a toll on his mental well-being.

Former West Ham goalkeeper Rob Green described the red card as “completely irresponsible” in comments to Sky Sports. West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo declined to discuss the incident until speaking directly with the player.

Liverpool secured victory through goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo after Paquetá’s dismissal, leaving West Ham 17th in the table. The sending-off adds to a turbulent period for Paquetá, who was formally warned in October for failing to fully cooperate with investigators during the betting case.

Paquetá’s comments are likely to draw renewed scrutiny on the relationship between players, clubs and the governing body as the FA continues its wider stance on integrity and disciplinary matters.
