The first top-flight derby between the two sides since the 2015/16 season began with Sunderland on the front foot, though their early dominance failed to translate into clear chances. The opening half was defined more by physical duels than attacking quality, with Nordi Mukiele’s late challenge forcing Dan Burn off injured and Granit Xhaka’s speculative long-range strike sailing harmlessly over the bar.

The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after the restart. Mukiele whipped in a dangerous cross from the right, and Woltemade, attempting to clear, misjudged his header and diverted the ball past Aaron Ramsdale, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

Eddie Howe turned to his bench in search of a response, introducing Harvey Barnes, Jacob Murphy, and Joe Willock. The changes injected some urgency, with Bruno Guimarães testing Robin Roefs from distance on multiple occasions. Yet Sunderland remained composed, and Wilson Isidor nearly doubled their advantage with a sharp effort that Ramsdale did well to block at his near post.

Despite Newcastle’s late pressure, Sunderland held firm in a fiery finale to secure a memorable derby triumph. The victory not only reinforced their dominance in this historic fixture but also underscored their growing momentum under Le Bris. For Newcastle, the defeat leaves them in 12th place, still searching for consistency in a season that has yet to ignite.
