Real Madrid back Vinicius Jr despite goal drought

Real Madrid remain firmly behind Vinicius Junior despite the forward’s prolonged struggles in front of goal and a mixed reception from supporters at the Bernabéu.

The Brazil international was jeered by sections of the home crowd during Saturday’s 2–0 victory over Sevilla, with head coach Xabi Alonso substituting him in the 83rd minute after another goalless display.

Vinicius Jr has now gone 14 matches without scoring, his last goals coming on 4 October when he struck twice against Villarreal.

Since then, the 24-year-old has endured a difficult spell both on and off the pitch, including a public disagreement with Alonso, a contract impasse and a series of cryptic social media posts.

Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo report that Real Madrid will “continue to support” the winger despite growing frustration among fans. Club sources admit his form is a concern but hope the situation can be resolved quickly.

Rodrygo resurgence eases pressure on Mbappé

Vinicius Jr’s struggles have been compounded by the form of compatriot Rodrygo, who has impressed in recent weeks. The 24-year-old, largely a substitute in the first half of the campaign, has contributed two goals and an assist in his last three starts.

Those strikes against Manchester City and Alavés mean Rodrygo is now just three goals behind Vinicius Jr’s tally for the season. The 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up has managed only five goals in 21 appearances, compared with Rodrygo’s return from seven starts.

The lack of output from Vinicius Jr has increased the burden on Kylian Mbappé, but Rodrygo’s revival offers the French forward much-needed support in attack.

With La Liga and Champions League ambitions at stake, Real Madrid will need Vinicius Jr to rediscover his best form in the second half of the season. The upcoming winter break could provide the reset he requires.
