Sulc sets the tone early

Czechia wasted no time asserting themselves on home soil. Just four minutes in, Pavel Sulc met a cleared corner with a crisp volley to put the hosts in front — a goal that set the tactical tone for the entire contest. Jaroslav Silhavy’s side sat deep after scoring, forcing Denmark to break down a disciplined and compact defensive block throughout.

Denmark push back – Andersen levels

Despite their early setback, Denmark dominated possession and created a succession of chances, with goalkeeper Matej Kovar in inspired form to keep them at bay. Kovar denied Rasmus Hojlund on multiple occasions and produced a fine tip over the bar to keep out Gustav Isaksen’s free kick. Denmark’s persistence finally paid off in the 72nd minute when Joachim Andersen powered a header from Mikkel Damsgaard’s delivery to level the tie.

Extra time thriller – two late goals

The tie required extra time to separate the sides. Czechia regained the lead in the 100th minute when Ladislav Krejci’s effort in a goalmouth scramble was deflected into the net off Alexander Bah, a cruel own goal for Denmark at a critical moment. However, Denmark refused to yield. Substitute Kasper Hogh headed in from Christian Eriksen’s corner in the 111th minute, just moments after coming on, to drag the match level once more and force a penalty shootout.

Kovar the hero as shootout nerves hold

In the shootout, Czechia required nerves of steel. Tomas Chory and Tomas Soucek converted their efforts, but Ladislav Krejci saw his kick saved to leave the outcome in the balance. Denmark’s task became impossible when Hojlund struck the crossbar, Anders Dreyer blazed over, and Mathias Jensen sent his kick high. Sadilek stepped up to deliver the winning penalty and trigger jubilant scenes across Prague.

Czechia’s path and World Cup group

Czechia had already needed penalties to overcome Ireland in the playoff semifinals, underlining the mental fortitude running through this squad. Denmark had reached the final more comfortably with a 4-0 demolition of North Macedonia, making their shootout collapse all the more painful for the Danes.

For Czechia, this is a moment two decades in the making. Their last World Cup appearance came in Germany in 2006, and a new generation of players, led by the ever-dependable Tomas Soucek — will now have the chance to make their mark on the biggest stage in football.

Denmark, meanwhile, face a difficult rebuilding question ahead of the next qualification cycle. Their early exit will prompt debate over whether a talented generation, including the likes of Eriksen and Hojlund, has now missed their best chance to compete at a World Cup together.
