Carrick keeps door open on Rashford return as Man United weigh future options
Michael Carrick has not ruled out a return for Marcus Rashford to Manchester United once the forward’s loan spell at FC Barcelona ends, saying a decision on the player’s future has yet to be made.
Rashford, 28, has not featured for United since December 2024. He spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Barcelona, where he has played a regular role for the LaLiga leaders.
Despite a steady campaign in Spain, uncertainty remains over whether Barcelona will make the move permanent, with reports suggesting hesitation over a 26.1 million pounds purchase clause.
That leaves Rashford facing an unclear path ahead of a summer in which he is aiming to be part of England’s squad for the World Cup in North America.
The forward still has two years remaining on his United contract, which could increase in value if the club secures qualification for next season’s Champions League.
“I think there are decisions to be made at the right time,” Carrick told reporters on Friday when asked about Rashford’s situation.
“At this stage, nothing has been decided. It will be addressed when the time comes, but for now there is nothing further to add.”
United, currently third in the table, travel to face Chelsea on Saturday, knowing a positive result would strengthen their push for a Champions League place.
Midfielder Kobbie Mainoo could return from injury for the trip to Stamford Bridge, having become an important figure under Carrick in recent months.
Mainoo’s progress mirrors that of defender Harry Maguire, who has re-established himself in the squad, offering a reminder that players can revive their roles under the current setup.
Carrick said his focus remains on the players currently available, while acknowledging that decisions on loan players will be made later.
“Whoever is here, I want to work with them and help them improve,” he said. “We have the squad we have right now, and the rest will take care of itself in due course.”
