Tottenham Hotspur secured their Premier League survival on a tense final day after a crucial victory over Everton FC, while West Ham United were relegated from the top flight after 14 consecutive seasons.
Spurs entered the final round knowing a draw would almost certainly be enough to stay up due to their superior goal difference over West Ham.
The breakthrough arrived just before halftime at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when João Palhinha reacted quickest after his header struck the post, poking home to spark huge celebrations among the home supporters.
Head coach Roberto De Zerbi sprinted down the touchline as Tottenham moved closer to preserving their Premier League status.
At the same time, West Ham were being held by Leeds United at the London Stadium and desperately needed Everton to find a way back into the game.
Valentín Castellanos later gave West Ham hope by opening the scoring, while late goals from Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson completed a 3-0 victory.
However, the result proved meaningless as Tottenham held on to secure survival and condemn the Hammers to relegation.
De Zerbi has overseen a late season improvement since arriving in March as Tottenham’s third manager of a chaotic campaign.
Relegation would have been a major financial setback for Spurs, who won the UEFA Europa League last season under former manager Ange Postecoglou.
West Ham will now play in the Championship next season alongside Burnley FC and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Elsewhere, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson received emotional farewells at Anfield as Liverpool FC drew 1-1 in their final home match of the season.
Despite tensions earlier in the week following Salah’s comments about former manager Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool boss Arne Slot included both departing stars in the starting lineup.
Meanwhile, Chelsea FC suffered a 2-1 defeat against Sunderland AFC, leaving incoming manager Xabi Alonso without European football next season.
Sunderland and AFC Bournemouth secured qualification for the Europa League, while Brighton & Hove Albion booked a place in the UEFA Conference League.
Champions Arsenal FC also celebrated their title success after defeating Crystal Palace FC 2-1 at Selhurst Park ahead of next week’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.
