Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after edging Arsenal in a thrilling final at the Puskas Arena, with midfielder João Neves delivering a standout performance in one of the season’s biggest matches.
The final brought together Europe’s most prolific attack and one of its strongest defences, as PSG sought to reinforce their status as the continent’s dominant force while Arsenal chased a historic Champions League triumph.
Pre-match momentum appeared to favour the Premier League champions. Arsenal arrived unbeaten in their previous six matches in all competitions, recording five wins and one draw. They had also enjoyed an impressive away record in Europe this season, winning five and drawing two of their seven Champions League matches on the road.
PSG entered the final with mixed recent form, posting three wins, two draws and one defeat from their last six outings. However, the French champions benefited from having several key players fresher than their Arsenal counterparts due to careful squad management during the Ligue 1 campaign.
The Parisians received a significant boost before kickoff when both Ousmane Dembélé and Achraf Hakimi were declared fit to start.
Arsenal made the breakthrough through Kai Havertz, whose superb finish saw him become only the fourth player in Champions League history to score in a final for two different clubs. The goal appeared to put the London side on course for victory, especially considering Arsenal had not lost any of the previous 33 matches in which Havertz had scored.
The English side’s defensive strength was highlighted by an outstanding display from Gabriel Magalhães. The defender dominated aerial battles, won key duels throughout the match and produced a series of crucial clearances to keep PSG at bay.
However, after 120 minutes of intense action failed to separate the teams, the final was decided by a penalty shootout. Gabriel’s missed spot-kick ultimately proved costly as PSG emerged victorious to retain Europe’s biggest club trophy.
While several players produced influential performances, including Declan Rice and David Raya for Arsenal, it was Neves who had the greatest impact on the contest.
The 21-year-old midfielder was the only PSG midfielder to complete the full 120 minutes and became increasingly influential as the game progressed. His intelligent movement, composure in possession and ability to find space allowed PSG to maintain control during crucial phases of the match.
Neves led the final in ground duels contested, consistently recovered possession and repeatedly disrupted Arsenal’s rhythm by drawing fouls in dangerous areas. He also contributed defensively with key tackles and interceptions while remaining a threat going forward.
His influence was reflected in the attacking statistics as well, finishing among PSG’s most active players in front of goal and recording more touches inside the Arsenal penalty area than any other player on the pitch.
Although players such as Dembélé and Hakimi attracted much of the pre-match attention, Neves’ all-round contribution proved decisive in helping PSG become only the second club in Champions League history to successfully defend their title.
In a final packed with quality and drama, the Portuguese midfielder’s performance may not generate the biggest headlines, but it was arguably the foundation upon which PSG built another memorable European triumph.
