France and Netherlands completed their final World Cup warm-up matches with victories on Monday, although both teams faced stern tests before securing the results.
France responded strongly after last week’s defeat to Ivory Coast, beating Northern Ireland 3-1 in Lille thanks to a brilliant performance from Michael Olise.
The Bayern Munich winger scored all three goals for Didier Deschamps’ side, including a superb third strike that sealed the victory. Northern Ireland briefly threatened a comeback when Patrick Kelly reduced the deficit in the 64th minute, but France held on comfortably.
The win provides a timely boost for France, who are among the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2026. Their campaign begins on June 16 against Senegal.
Meanwhile, the Netherlands needed a dramatic late penalty to defeat Uzbekistan 2-1 in New York.
Cody Gakpo gave the Dutch the lead from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute and appeared to have secured victory until a dramatic finish unfolded.
The Netherlands were reduced to 10 men when Guus Til was sent off in the 87th minute. Uzbekistan took advantage as Igor Sergeev equalised deep into stoppage time.
However, there was one final twist as the Dutch were awarded another penalty in the eighth minute of added time. Gakpo stepped up again and converted to hand his side a narrow victory in their final match before the World Cup.
The Netherlands also confirmed a major injury setback ahead of the tournament. Defender Jurrien Timber has been ruled out after failing to recover fully from a groin injury.
The 24-year-old, who plays for Arsenal, will miss the World Cup, dealing a significant blow to the Dutch defence as they prepare for the tournament.
