Football fans thought they had seen the last of Ronaldinho on the pitch. More than a decade after his final professional appearance, the Brazilian legend is preparing for a remarkable comeback after agreeing a sensational move to Italian Serie C side Ravenna.
The former Barcelona and AC Milan superstar, now 46, is set to be officially presented by the club during a special event in Miami on June 23. While reports in Italy suggest there is still uncertainty over how much of a playing role he will have next season, the announcement alone has already sent shockwaves through the football world.
Known for his dazzling skills, infectious smile, and ability to entertain like few others in the history of the game, Ronaldinho appears ready to begin an unexpected new chapter.
“New colours, same smile,” the Brazilian icon said after the deal was confirmed.
“I can’t wait to dance on the ball again and write a new story together with Ignazio and the whole Cipriani family. Football has always brought me joy, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”
Ronaldinho retired from professional football following a short spell with Fluminense in 2015. Since then, he has remained one of the sport’s most recognisable figures, but few could have predicted a return to club football more than ten years later.
The driving force behind the move is Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani, who admitted that signing his childhood hero was a dream come true.
“Ronaldinho was my idol growing up, and his influence goes far beyond football,” Cipriani said.
“What he brings to this club is about more than what happens on the pitch. I hope his presence inspires a new generation of supporters to fall in love with Ravenna and become part of the future we are building.”
Although Ravenna currently compete in Italy’s third tier, the club has a history of attracting notable names. Former Italy stars Christian Vieri, Fabio Cannavaro, Alberto Gilardino, and Vincenzo Montella all represented the club during their careers.
Now, one of football’s greatest entertainers joins that distinguished list.
Whether Ronaldinho makes competitive appearances or serves in a more symbolic role remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that one of the game’s most beloved figures is back in football, and fans everywhere will be watching closely to see if the magic still remains.
