Ancelotti Reflects on Hard-Fought Victory Over Atalanta

Carlo Ancelotti has stated his squad was forced to endure challenges by Atalanta in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter.

Defending champions Madrid narrowly overcame Atalanta 3-2 owing to strikes from Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Vinícius Júnior.

The La Liga powerhouse had to cling on to secure the victory as they withstood a late surge from Atalanta.

“It was a well-rounded display; we struggled but also generated numerous opportunities, with plenty of movement upfront involving Bellingham, Vinícius, and initially Mbappé,” Ancelotti told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were aware we would need to struggle; we are still lacking several players, meaning we cannot operate at full strength, but we required a display like this in such a challenging environment against an Atalanta side that competes with remarkable energy.

“We didn’t want to maintain a deep defensive line since our center-backs weren’t particularly tall, and their aerial deliveries could pose issues,” clarified Ancelotti.

“So we attempted everything to keep them away from our defensive zone, and we succeeded at certain moments more than others. It was essential because Atalanta plays with tremendous vigor, and we had to match them in that regard.

Despite the triumph, Madrid remains alarmingly low in the standings at 18th position awaiting Wednesday’s outcomes.

Ancelotti remarked: “I mentioned before the match that we must survive until Christmas because the roster is thin, and we are missing numerous players. We got Vini back today; Camavinga should rejoin next week, followed by Alaba in January. Once we have a more complete lineup, we can compete more effectively.”
