Alvaro Arbeloa has defended Kylian Mbappe following criticism of the forward’s defensive effort in Real Madrid’s Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.
Mbappe came under scrutiny after Real’s quarter final defeat, with some observers questioning his work rate without the ball. Arbeloa rejected that view, insisting the forward delivered a complete performance across both legs.
“I have nothing to reproach Kylian about,” Arbeloa told reporters on Monday. “He was decisive, he scored in both matches and remained a constant threat. He also worked hard defensively and gave everything for the team.”
Real were eliminated after a 4-3 loss in the second leg, with Bayern progressing 6-4 on aggregate. The Spanish side were reduced to 10 men late on when Eduardo Camavinga was sent off in the 86th minute, a turning point that allowed Bayern to strike twice and seal qualification.
The late collapse intensified criticism of Mbappe, but Arbeloa made clear he viewed the result as a collective failure rather than an individual one.
Mbappe, now in his second season in Spain, has scored 40 goals in all competitions, underlining his importance to the team. However, he will have to wait longer to achieve his ambition of winning the Champions League, a key factor behind his move from Paris Saint-Germain.
Adding to the frustration, PSG went on to lift the trophy last season, deepening the sense of unfinished business for the France international.
Arbeloa himself is facing mounting pressure, with Madrid set to end the campaign without silverware. Barcelona hold a nine point advantage at the top of LaLiga with seven matches remaining, leaving Real with little margin for recovery.
The coach declined to discuss his long term future, stating that decisions were beyond his control. He did, however, dismiss suggestions that major changes are required.
“There is no need for a huge overhaul,” he said. “The foundations are there, and the focus must be on improving and competing better next season.”
Real return to league action against Alaves on Tuesday as they attempt to close the gap at the top, even as scrutiny continues to grow around both results and direction.
