Arteta eager for Saka to follow Saliba and extend Arsenal deal

Arsenal head coach Mikel Arteta has expressed his hope that Bukayo Saka will commit his future to the club with a new contract, following teammate William Saliba’s recently agreed five-year extension. Saliba’s renewal, which Arsenal secured despite interest from Real Madrid, is expected to be officially announced next week. Saka’s current deal runs until 2027, though no immediate announcement on his contract situation is anticipated.

Arteta highlighted Saka’s happiness and pride in his role at Arsenal, stating that discussions about the winger’s contract will unfold naturally. “Everyone knows how important Bukayo is for us. Hopefully we can do it,” Arteta said. Like Saliba, Saka has been integral to Arsenal’s recent performances, contributing both creativity and consistency to a team that has conceded only one goal from open play so far this Premier League season.

Saliba, 24, is regarded as a defensive cornerstone alongside Gabriel, forming arguably the strongest central defensive partnership in the league. His decision to stay, rebuffing overtures from Real Madrid, marks a significant endorsement of Arsenal’s project under Arteta, who is targeting a first league title for the club in 22 years. Arteta emphasized the defender’s maturity and desire to continue developing at Arsenal, reflecting the growing ambition within the squad.

Regarding Real Madrid’s interest, Arteta noted, “Players have feelings, and maybe dreaming about something one day is a natural thing to have. When I asked William, he said, ‘No, I want to stay here, I want to play for you, and I’m very happy.’”

As Arsenal prepares for their Premier League match against Newcastle, with captain Martin Ødegaard returning from injury, the club is positioned five points behind leaders Liverpool. The contract renewals of Saliba, Gabriel, and potentially Saka reinforce Arsenal’s strategy of retaining and nurturing key talent to sustain their competitive trajectory and challenge for major honors.
