Australia produced one of the biggest surprises of the FIFA World Cup 2026 so far with a disciplined 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group D opener on Saturday, as coach Tony Popovic’s bold team selection decisions delivered immediate rewards.
Goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe secured all three points for the Socceroos at BC Place Stadium, while goalkeeper Patrick Beach starred with a series of crucial saves in only his third international appearance.
Popovic raised eyebrows before kickoff by leaving veteran captain and goalkeeper Maty Ryan on the bench and handing Beach a starting role. The Australia coach also omitted vice-captain Jackson Irvine, opting instead for 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler in a youthful lineup featuring 10 World Cup debutants.
The gamble paid off as Australia frustrated a highly rated Turkish side that controlled possession for long periods but struggled to break down a well-organised defence.
Turkey, making their first World Cup appearance since their memorable third-place finish in 2002, entered the tournament with high expectations thanks to a squad packed with players from Europe’s elite leagues.
However, Australia’s disciplined approach and clinical finishing proved decisive.
Turkey created the first major opening in the 27th minute when Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler unleashed a powerful effort that forced Beach into a sharp save.
Moments later, Australia struck.
Beach launched a long pass from deep inside his own half to Okon-Engstler, who quickly released Irankunda with an accurate ball over the Turkish defence. The winger controlled brilliantly before racing clear and calmly firing a low finish past the goalkeeper.
Irankunda celebrated by recreating Tim Cahill’s famous corner-flag boxing routine, delighting the Australian supporters inside the stadium.
Turkey almost responded immediately when Abdulkerim Bardakci’s long-range strike appeared destined for the top corner, but Beach managed to get a fingertip to the effort and divert it onto the post.
The Australian goalkeeper continued to impress after the break, producing another important save to deny Guler’s dangerous free kick.
With Turkey pushing forward in search of an equaliser, Australia sealed the victory in the 75th minute.
Metcalfe collected possession in midfield, drove forward into space and unleashed a powerful strike from 25 yards that found the back of the net to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory leaves Australia level on three points with the United States at the top of Group D. The Socceroos will face the Americans in Seattle on Friday in a match that could have a significant impact on qualification for the knockout stage.
Turkey, meanwhile, will be left searching for answers after failing to convert their territorial dominance into goals in a disappointing start to their World Cup campaign.
