Authorities urge €4k fine for racist abuse of Marcus Rashford
Spanish authorities have proposed a €4,000 ($4,625) fine against a Real Oviedo supporter accused of racially abusing Barcelona forward Marcus Rashford during a La Liga match on September 25.
The government’s National Anti-Violence Commission said Thursday the incident occurred during Barcelona’s 3–1 victory at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere, where an Oviedo fan allegedly directed a racial slur in Spanish at Rashford.
According to the commission, La Liga detected footage circulating on social media and reported the matter to the National Police. Subsequent analysis of video from the stadium’s Organizational Control Unit (UCO) enabled authorities to identify the alleged offender. The proposal remains subject to the outcome of ongoing criminal proceedings.
Rashford, 27, is spending the 2025–26 season on loan at Barcelona from Manchester United. The England international, known for his pace, finishing, and off-ball intelligence, has been an active voice against racism and social discrimination throughout his career.
The forward has faced several instances of racist abuse in the past, including a 2021 case in which a man was jailed in England for targeting him on social media following the Euro 2020 final.
Spanish football has faced increasing scrutiny over racist incidents in recent seasons, prompting league authorities and the government to strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures aimed at protecting players and eradicating discriminatory behavior from stadiums.
