Barça’s Raphinha considered exit for Saudi

Barcelona winger Raphinha signed a contract extension through 2028 in the summer of 2025, having previously considered a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. The Brazil international, who had initially faced doubts about his future at the club, was persuaded to stay by new manager Hansi Flick, following his appointment in early 2024. His performances since then have been instrumental, helping Barcelona secure multiple domestic titles.

Raphinha revealed in an exclusive interview that an offer from Saudi Arabia tempted him greatly, promising financial security for his family. However, discussions with Flick, first via phone and then during preseason, convinced him to remain at Camp Nou. The German coach quickly made Raphinha a critical attacking component, deploying him primarily on the left flank.

Since Flick’s arrival, Raphinha’s output surged significantly, with an impressive haul of 34 goals and 26 assists in 57 appearances across all competitions last season. This contribution was a key factor behind Barcelona’s capture of LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa. His tally far exceeded the combined total of 20 goals from his initial two seasons at the club.

Despite his on-field impact, Raphinha faced criticism early on, particularly when Barcelona exhibited interest in Athletic Club’s Nico Williams, which he perceived as disrespectful. Reports of fans favoring Williams and a viral image of a Williams shirt with Raphinha’s number intensified the uncertainty surrounding his place at the club. However, Raphinha remained resolute, emphasizing his dedication, work rate, and team contribution over raw goal-scoring numbers.

“The offer we had from Saudi Arabia really tempted me. It would have solved not just my personal life, but also the lives of my parents and my son,” Raphinha stated. “But after talking with [Flick], I was convinced to stay. I’m glad I did.”

Currently sidelined with a thigh injury, Raphinha has missed Barcelona’s recent matches, including fixtures against Girona. He is expected to recover in time for the high-profile Clásico against Real Madrid scheduled for October 26. His return will be vital, especially as Barcelona continue to cope with injuries to key players Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo.

Raphinha’s renewed commitment and improved performances under Flick highlight his importance within Barcelona’s tactical setup. His blend of creativity, pressing resistance, and finishing ability aligns closely with the manager’s high-intensity, attacking philosophy. This signing signals Barcelona’s broader strategy to build a dynamic, competitive squad capable of challenging for domestic and European honors, while Raphinha’s career trajectory is firmly oriented towards consistency at the highest level.
