Bongonda strike earns DR Congo opening AFCON win

Theo Bongonda’s first-half goal gave the Democratic Republic of Congo a narrow 1-0 victory over Benin in their Africa Cup of Nations opener in Rabat.

The Spartak Moscow forward struck after 16 minutes at the Al Medina Stadium, capitalising on hesitant defending to steer home a long ball.

Cedric Bakambu thought he had doubled the Leopards’ advantage shortly after half-time when he headed in Nathanael Mbuku’s cross, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a lengthy VAR check.

Leopards make strong start

One goal proved enough for Sebastien Desabre’s side, who were roared on by the majority of the crowd in Morocco. The result gives DR Congo an early boost in Group D, which also features defending champions Senegal and Botswana.

Senegal and Botswana were due to meet later on Tuesday in Tangier, with the outcome likely to shape the complexion of the group.

History and ambition

DR Congo reached the semi-finals of the last AFCON in Ivory Coast but have not lifted the trophy since 1974, when they triumphed as Zaire.

Desabre’s squad blends experience and youth, with West Ham United full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Sunderland midfielder Noah Sadiki among the notable names.

Beyond continental ambitions, the Leopards are also eyeing a place at the 2026 World Cup. They face either New Caledonia or Jamaica in a play-off in Mexico in March, with the winner joining Portugal, Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K.

What it means

Victory over Benin sets DR Congo up for a crucial clash with Senegal later in the group stage. Bongonda’s strike may prove pivotal in their bid to progress, while Bakambu and Mbuku showed glimpses of attacking promise despite the disallowed goal.

For Desabre, the challenge will be maintaining momentum as the Leopards seek to end a 51-year wait for continental glory and secure their place on the world stage.
