Brighton & Hove Albion extended Chelsea’s poor run with a dominant 3-0 Premier League win on Tuesday, deepening the visitors’ slide and boosting their own push for European qualification.
Goals from Ferdi Kadıoğlu, Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck secured the result, lifting Brighton to sixth place on 50 points, two ahead of Chelsea.
Chelsea have now managed just one win in their last nine league matches and are in danger of missing out on European competition next season.
Brighton took control early, with Kadıoğlu opening the scoring in the third minute, finishing from close range after a flick on from a corner. The hosts continued to threaten and nearly doubled their lead when a misplaced pass from Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez fell to Carlos Baleba, who set up Hinshelwood, only for Trevoh Chalobah to clear the effort.
Chelsea struggled to respond and failed to register a shot on target before halftime. The introduction of Alejandro Garnacho after the break briefly lifted the visitors, with the winger creating an early chance for Roméo Lavia, who fired over.
Any momentum was short lived. Brighton struck again in the 56th minute as Hinshelwood finished off a swift counter attack following a pass from Georginio Rutter.
Chelsea continued to struggle in attack, and substitute Welbeck added a late third goal to seal a comprehensive victory and extend Chelsea’s run to five consecutive league defeats without scoring.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior criticised his team’s performance, describing it as unacceptable.
“It’s nowhere near enough for this club. I can’t come out and hide from it. That performance was not at the level required,” he told reporters.
He added that it was one of the most difficult nights of his managerial career, citing concerns over what he saw from his players on the pitch.
Chelsea now turn their attention to an FA Cup semi final against Leeds United on Sunday, a match that could prove decisive for their season.
Rosenior said the focus will be on correcting mistakes quickly ahead of that fixture.
