Brighton’s Hurzeler: Danny Welbeck has ‘big chance’ of going to World Cup
MANCHESTER, England – Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler said on Sunday that forward Danny Welbeck could earn a place in England’s squad for next year’s World Cup if he maintains his current form, following the 34-year-old’s seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 win over Brentford.
Welbeck has edged closer to an international return after England head coach Thomas Tuchel revealed earlier in November that the striker was “close” to his first call-up in seven years for the national team’s recent camp. Hürzeler said he has encouraged the former Manchester United and Arsenal player to stay focused on his club performances.
“I had a discussion with him and an exchange about the situation,” Hürzeler said, noting that the decision ultimately rests with Tuchel and his staff.
England secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup in Mexico, Canada and the United States with a perfect record of eight wins from eight matches. The Three Lions will learn their group-stage opponents at the draw on Dec. 5 at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
Hürzeler said Welbeck’s chances will hinge on more than goals. The striker’s work rate, movement, and leadership have been key components of Brighton’s attack this season, and the manager believes those qualities could strengthen his case for national selection.
“Some decisions you can’t control or influence,” Hürzeler said. “He should focus on the things he can influence, and that’s how he performs for us. It’s not only scoring goals. It’s how he works and how he is a leader on the pitch. If he continues doing that, he has a big chance.”
Welbeck’s resurgence adds depth to England’s forward options as Tuchel evaluates experienced profiles to complement his younger attacking pool ahead of the tournament.
