Chelsea winger Estêvão will miss the rest of the English season due to injury, casting doubt over his availability for the FIFA World Cup 2026, interim manager Calum McFarlane said on Friday.
The 19-year-old picked up a hamstring injury during Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last week and is not expected to return before the end of the campaign.
“Estevao won’t play again this season,” McFarlane told reporters ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi final against Leeds United.
“He’s going to be out for some time, which is unfortunate, especially for a young player with his level of talent. We will support him through his recovery.”
McFarlane, who returned to the role following the departure of Liam Rosenior earlier this week, said it remains unclear whether the winger will recover in time for international duty this summer.
“I’m not sure about the World Cup at this stage,” he said. “He will be hoping to be fit, but right now the focus is on his recovery.”
The injury is a setback for both club and country, with Estevao emerging as one of Chelsea’s brightest attacking options this season.
