Egypt have renewed Hossam Hassan’s contract as national team coach until 2030, extending the former international striker’s stay in charge after the Pharaohs produced the best World Cup campaign in the country’s history.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed on Tuesday that Hassan would remain at the helm through the next four years, formalising its decision to continue with the coach and his technical staff.
The extension gives Egypt continuity after a period in which Hassan has overseen significant progress since taking charge in February 2024. His side reached the knockout rounds of the 2026 World Cup for the first time in Egypt’s history, before their campaign ended with a 3-2 defeat by Argentina in the last 16.
Egypt had earlier recorded their first World Cup victory under Hassan, beating New Zealand 3-1 in the group stage, before overcoming Australia on penalties in their first knockout match at the tournament.
Egypt back Hassan after historic World Cup run
The decision to retain Hassan reflects the Egyptian Football Association’s desire for stability as the national team moves into its next cycle.
Hassan’s contract renewal means he is set to lead Egypt towards the 2030 World Cup, with the Pharaohs seeking to build on a campaign that raised expectations following their breakthrough on football’s biggest stage.
The 60-year-old took over the national team after Egypt’s disappointing exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and has since overseen 35 matches, winning 20, drawing nine and losing six.
His tenure has included Egypt’s run to the latter stages of the Africa Cup of Nations and their historic progress at the 2026 World Cup, giving the federation reason to continue with the project rather than make another change in the dugout.
Continuity for Egypt’s next international cycle
Hassan is one of the most prominent figures in Egyptian football, having also enjoyed a distinguished international career as a player. Egypt’s all-time leading scorer, he won three Africa Cup of Nations titles and helped the country reach the 1990 World Cup.
His challenge now is to turn Egypt’s recent progress into sustained success. The renewed contract provides the coach with a longer-term mandate as the Pharaohs prepare for the competitions and qualification campaigns ahead.
For Egypt, the decision removes immediate uncertainty over the future of the national team and keeps the coach who guided them to their most successful World Cup performance in place for the road to 2030.
The next phase will determine whether the momentum created in 2026 can be converted into another step forward for one of Africa’s most successful national teams.
