Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen has been discharged from hospital after collapsing during Sunday’s international match against Ukraine, with team doctor Morten Boesen saying the player is recovering well at home with his family.
The 34-year-old collapsed in the 65th minute of the match in Odense, prompting immediate medical attention before the game was abandoned.
“I spoke with Christian this morning, and he is doing well. He is with his family and in good spirits,” Boesen said in a statement released by the Danish Football Association.
Boesen said there were strong indications that Eriksen’s implanted defibrillator had activated as intended during the incident. The midfielder reportedly regained consciousness quickly and even requested to walk to the ambulance after receiving treatment on the pitch.
Later on Monday, Eriksen reassured fans about his condition in a message posted on social media.
“I want everyone to know that I’m doing well and that I’m at home with my family,” Eriksen wrote.
The former Manchester United and Inter Milan midfielder thanked teammates, medical staff and emergency responders for their support.
“Thanks to their expertise, my defibrillator did exactly what it was designed to do: protect me when I needed it,” he said. “Right now, I’m focusing on recovering, spending time with my family, going on holiday and playing football with my kids.”
Eriksen was taken to Odense University Hospital for further examinations to determine the cause of the collapse.
The incident revived memories of Eriksen’s cardiac arrest during Denmark’s opening match at UEFA Euro 2020 against Finland in Copenhagen in 2021. He was successfully resuscitated on the pitch before later having a defibrillator implanted.
The Danish federation has not provided a timeline for Eriksen’s return to football as medical assessments continue.
