Fenerbahce produced a spirited comeback performance to defeat Liverpool 3-2 in a thrilling UEFA Champions League league-phase encounter, ending the Reds’ flawless record in this season’s competition.
Despite the torrential conditions, Liverpool threatened early through a sequence of defensive errors. Victor Munoz and Bradley Barcola both failed to clear their lines, inadvertently creating an opportunity for the Spaniard, whose effort forced Ederson into a save at his near post.
Liverpool continued to ask questions of the Fenerbahce defence, with Barcola coming agonisingly close to connecting with Joe Gomez’s inviting cross. The visitors looked the more dangerous side, but a brief penalty scare involving Kostas Tsimikas and Mason Greenwood served as a warning of the threat posed by the hosts.
The breakthrough eventually arrived courtesy of teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni. The youngster struck a superb volley that wrong-footed Ederson and found the net for his first senior goal, giving Liverpool a deserved lead.
Fenerbahce nearly responded immediately when Irfan Kahveci crashed an effort against the crossbar after latching onto a dangerous delivery. Their persistence soon paid off, however. Mason Greenwood’s free-kick took a decisive deflection off Jeremy Jacquet in the Liverpool wall, wrong-footing Alisson and bringing the Turkish side level.
Buoyed by the equaliser, Fenerbahce finished the first half strongly, with Greenwood drawing another important save from Alisson before the interval.
Liverpool regained control after the restart and came close to restoring their advantage. Ederson reacted sharply to keep out a Barcola effort before producing another fine stop to deny Virgil van Dijk from the resulting corner. Munoz also threatened, cutting inside onto his stronger foot only to see his effort blocked by Milan Skriniar.
Seeking a decisive moment, Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola turned to his bench, and the change delivered an immediate impact. Cody Gakpo’s pinpoint cross was met by Alexander Isak, who headed home his first Champions League goal for Liverpool with his very first touch of the match.
Yet Liverpool’s lead lasted only moments. Fenerbahce responded instantly once again as Gakpo inadvertently flicked on a corner, allowing Archie Brown to tap in from close range at the far post.
With momentum firmly on their side, the hosts completed the turnaround late on. Substitute Vedat Muriqi rose highest to meet a cross and powered a header beyond Alisson, sealing a memorable victory for the Yellow Canaries.
The result marks a landmark moment for manager Dirk Kuyt, whose side finally ended a 10-match winless streak in the Champions League. For Liverpool, the defeat continues a miserable record in Turkey, with the Reds still searching for their first away victory in the country in Europe’s premier competition after seven attempts.
While Liverpool will rue their inability to hold onto the lead twice, Fenerbahce’s resilience and clinical finishing ensured a famous European night in Istanbul.
