From Messi to Yamal: Two Gamper Debuts, Worlds Apart
Barcelona’s young No. 10 steps into the spotlight with a résumé that took Messi years to build
On Sunday night, all eyes will be on Lamine Yamal when Barcelona host Como in the Joan Gamper Trophy. The 18-year-old winger will step out in the famous No. 10 shirt for the first time in the preseason showcase, a number that in Barcelona means more than just a jersey. It is a symbol of superstardom.
It is hard not to think back to 20 years ago, when another 18-year-old took the Gamper stage for the first time: Lionel Messi.
In 2004, Messi was just a teenager from Rosario, Argentina, trying to make a name for himself. That night, against Italian champions Juventus, a lineup packed with David Trezeguet, Alessandro Del Piero, Pavel Nedved, Gianluigi Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro, he stole the show. Juventus coach Fabio Capello admitted afterward that the kid had left him speechless. At the time, Ronaldinho was Barcelona’s main attraction, with Samuel Eto’o and Deco alongside him. Messi was a raw, dazzling prospect.
Yamal’s debut comes under completely different circumstances. He is already a star, a full Spanish international, twice a Ballon d’Or nominee, and fresh off leading Barcelona to a domestic treble last season. He also played a major role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.
The comparisons to Messi are natural, but Yamal’s rise has been even faster. The real test will be longevity. Messi’s brilliance stretched over 15 years, a standard few in history have matched.
For now, the teenager from Rocafonda has a head start. And on Sunday, the Gamper might not just be a preseason friendly. It could be another moment when Barcelona fans realize the future is already here.
