Gordon injury leaves England availability unclear

Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon is a doubt for England’s upcoming international fixtures after suffering a recurrence of a hip injury during Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League victory over Athletic Club.

The 23-year-old was withdrawn in the 41st minute after appearing to aggravate a problem that had troubled him during Newcastle’s 3-1 defeat to West Ham last weekend. Gordon, who looked short of full fitness, went down clutching his hip moments after missing a volley and was replaced by Jacob Murphy before halftime.

“I’ve not spoken to him yet and haven’t had a full rundown from the medical team,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said after the match. “It seems like a recurrence of the hip injury that’s been plaguing him in recent weeks. We’ll assess it and see what damage is there.”

Gordon’s injury comes at a critical time, with England coach Thomas Tuchel set to announce his squad on Friday for November’s fixtures against Serbia and Albania. The winger had been considered a strong candidate for selection following his impressive start to the season, which has included several standout performances in both domestic and European competition.

Despite the setback, Newcastle secured a convincing win at St James’ Park, with Dan Burn’s powerful header opening the scoring before Joelinton doubled the lead shortly after the break. The result lifted Eddie Howe’s side to sixth in the Champions League league phase table.

The extent of Gordon’s injury remains to be determined, but any significant setback would be a blow to both Newcastle’s attacking options and England’s depth on the wings ahead of their upcoming qualifiers.
