Harry Kane rescues Bayern but win record ends

BERLIN, Nov. 9 – Harry Kane scored a stoppage-time equaliser to earn Bayern Munich a 2-2 draw at Union Berlin on Saturday, ending the Bundesliga leaders’ record 16-match winning start to the season.

The England captain headed home in the fourth minute of added time to secure a point for Vincent Kompany’s side, after Union’s Danilho Doekhi struck twice and Luis Díaz had earlier levelled for the visitors. The result halted Bayern’s perfect run in all competitions but maintained their unbeaten start under Kompany.

Union Berlin began strongly and thought they had taken an early lead when Ilyas Ansah’s header found the net, only for VAR to rule the effort out for offside. The hosts were rewarded for their persistence in the 27th minute when Doekhi converted from close range after a corner caused confusion in the Bayern defence.

Bayern, sluggish after their midweek Champions League victory over Paris Saint-Germain, struggled to create chances but equalised seven minutes before half-time. Josip Stanišić delivered a well-weighted pass into the area, and Díaz, who scored both goals in Paris, powered home from a tight angle.

Union continued to threaten after the break, with Janik Haberer missing a clear chance before Doekhi restored the lead in the 83rd minute, firing a low volley past Manuel Neuer following a set-piece. However, Kane’s late intervention — his 23rd goal of the season in all competitions — salvaged Bayern’s first dropped Bundesliga points of the campaign.

The draw leaves Bayern still firmly top of the table but brings an end to their historic start, which had been the longest opening winning streak in any of Europe’s top five leagues. For Kompany, it was a reminder of the domestic challenges that remain despite their European form.

Union Berlin, meanwhile, produced one of their strongest performances of the season, matching Bayern in intensity and structure. The result could serve as a turning point for Nenad Bjelica’s side, who have struggled for consistency this term.

Bayern will look to rebound next weekend as they host RB Leipzig, while Kane’s late heroics reaffirm his growing influence in Germany, both as a scorer and a leader in Kompany’s evolving system.
