John Terry to Auction Iconic Chelsea Memorabilia for Charity
John Terry is set to part with some of the most memorable items from his Chelsea career, including the famous shirt from the 2008 Champions League final loss to Manchester United. The former Blues captain will put his collection up for auction, with all proceeds going to support charities through the John Terry Foundation.
Terry’s auction features a remarkable array of personal football memorabilia, led by two iconic Champions League shirts. The first is the shirt from the 2008 final in Moscow, a game remembered for Terry’s missed penalty in the shootout that handed victory to Manchester United. The second is the full Chelsea kit from the 2012 final against Bayern Munich. Though suspended, Terry donned his playing kit to join teammates in lifting the trophy, creating one of the most enduring images of European football.
The charity sale will comprise 26 lots, hosted by Goldin Auctions in New Jersey, and is scheduled to conclude on December 31. All funds will benefit the John Terry Foundation, which supports a variety of British charities close to the former defender’s heart.
Terry explained that the decision to sell was motivated by charitable goals rather than sentimentality. The 2008 shirt, described as “tear-stained,” represents one of the most painful moments of his career, while the 2012 kit symbolizes redemption at the pinnacle of European football. By releasing these items, Terry hopes to raise significant funds while giving fans and collectors a chance to own pieces of Chelsea’s golden era.
Among the auction highlights is Terry’s Premier League winner’s medal from the 2004-05 season, Chelsea’s first league title in 50 years. As captain, Terry lifted the trophy, and the medal alone is expected to fetch up to £75,000. Other notable lots include match-worn shirts exchanged with elite players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Thierry Henry from Arsenal’s 2003-04 Invincibles season.
The Champions League memorabilia carries particular resonance. The 2008 Moscow final shirt, estimated at £3,750, captures one of the most dramatic nights in European football. Meanwhile, the miniature Champions League trophy and full-kit celebration shirt from 2012 highlight the emotional highs Terry experienced at the top level.
