Liverpool need to find consistency after snapping losing streak – Virgil van Dijk

LONDON – Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said the squad must prioritize consistency after ending a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats with a 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Sunday.

Liverpool climbed to eighth in the table with goals from Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo at the London Stadium, reducing the gap to leaders Arsenal to nine points. The win offered relief for manager Arne Slot after a difficult recent spell, but Van Dijk said the focus remains internal rather than on the standings.

“It was an important win,” Van Dijk said. “I don’t think there’s any point in looking at the table. We didn’t do it last year and we shouldn’t now. We just need to find consistency in the way we play, defend and attack.”

Isak scored his first Premier League goal for Liverpool since joining from Newcastle United in a deal understood to be worth around £125 million. The striker has struggled for fitness and form since arriving in the summer but produced a decisive finish early in the second half.

Van Dijk said the goal could provide a platform for the 25-year-old forward.

“Hopefully a lot,” he said. “We need him in his best form and shape. I’m glad he scored today.”

Liverpool’s erratic early-season results have raised questions over Slot’s tactical rebuild, particularly as the club transitions to a more possession-based system. The clean sheet in London was Liverpool’s first since October and reflected the defensive control the manager has been seeking to establish.

Van Dijk dismissed suggestions that the squad required added motivation following the recent losses.

“There wasn’t extra determination needed,” he said. “Criticism is part of the game. We just have to control what we can on the pitch.”

Liverpool face a quick turnaround before their next match on Wednesday. The victory over West Ham eases immediate pressure, but Van Dijk stressed that the result must serve as a foundation rather than a turning point.

“It was a good win,” he said. “Now we move on.”
