Liverpool Owners FSG Sell Minority Stake to Bezos-Backed Consortium

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has agreed to sell a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club to a consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, in a deal that brings one of the world’s most influential technology figures into Premier League ownership. FSG will remain the club’s majority owner and continue to control football operations at Anfield.

The investment group, known as 1892 Holdings, is led by businessman Amit Bhatia and includes investors connected with Bezos, as well as other high-profile figures from the global business world. The agreement values Liverpool at around £5.5 billion, with the consortium acquiring approximately 30% of the club.

The transaction marks Bezos’ first major move into football ownership. The Amazon founder, who built one of the world’s largest technology companies, has previously explored opportunities in professional sports but had not completed an investment in a major sports franchise before this agreement.

Bhatia is expected to take a more active role in Liverpool’s leadership structure, becoming vice-chairman and joining the club’s board. Other representatives from the investment group are also expected to take board positions, while Bezos will remain an investor without a board seat.

FSG, which bought Liverpool in 2010 for around £300 million, has overseen one of the most successful periods in the club’s modern history. Under its ownership, Liverpool returned to the top of English and European football, winning the Premier League title, the Champions League and multiple domestic trophies.

The investment comes as elite football clubs continue to attract significant interest from global investors seeking exposure to the commercial growth of the sport. Liverpool’s worldwide fan base, commercial revenues and status as one of football’s most valuable brands have made the club a major target for institutional and private investment.

FSG has stated that the agreement is designed to support Liverpool’s long-term growth rather than represent a move towards a full sale of the club. The ownership group will continue to oversee strategic decisions, including sporting operations, recruitment and financial planning.

Liverpool’s commercial strength has grown significantly during FSG’s ownership, with the club reporting record revenues in recent seasons. The new investment provides additional financial backing and introduces partners with experience in technology, international markets and global business expansion.

The deal still requires the necessary regulatory approvals before completion. Once finalised, it will represent one of the largest minority investments in Premier League history and another example of the increasing financial value of England’s top-flight football clubs.

For Liverpool, the immediate focus remains on maintaining success on the pitch while using the new partnership to strengthen the club’s position internationally. FSG’s continued control means the club’s sporting direction is expected to remain unchanged, but the arrival of new investors could influence future commercial expansion and global growth strategies.
