Maguire winner piles more pain on Liverpool

Harry Maguire’s late header sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory for Manchester United over Liverpool on Sunday, handing Erik ten Hag’s side a morale-boosting win and deepening Liverpool’s recent slump in form.

Liverpool, who have now gone four league games without a win, took the lead midway through the first half when Mohamed Salah finished a swift counterattack. But United responded after the break, with Bruno Fernandes equalizing from close range following sustained pressure.

Maguire, restored to the starting lineup after weeks on the bench, rose highest in the 83rd minute to nod home a corner from Christian Eriksen, sending Old Trafford into celebration and securing all three points for United.

The defeat leaves Jürgen Klopp’s side further adrift in the title race, their defensive frailties once again exposed despite dominating possession. United, meanwhile, climbed back into the top four, continuing their recent revival under Ten Hag.

For Maguire, the match represented a personal turnaround after a challenging spell at the club. His decisive performance at both ends of the pitch earned widespread applause and may strengthen his case for a regular starting role.

United will look to build on the momentum when they face Aston Villa next weekend, while Liverpool must regroup quickly ahead of their midweek Champions League tie at Anfield.
