Manchester City moved to the top of the Premier League table after a narrow 1-0 win at Burnley, a result that also confirmed the hosts’ relegation.
Erling Haaland scored the only goal at Turf Moor, lifting City above Arsenal on goals scored with five matches remaining in the title race.
Despite the victory, City manager Pep Guardiola showed visible frustration as his side failed to extend their advantage after a dominant start.
Fresh from their recent win over Arsenal, City began on the front foot. Martin Dubravka produced an early save to deny Rayan Cherki, but he was beaten soon after when Haaland latched onto a pass from Jérémy Doku and finished with composure.
City continued to create chances but were unable to add to their lead. Guardiola’s frustration grew as the tempo dropped, allowing Burnley to remain within reach.
The hosts nearly punished that lack of cutting edge before halftime when Zian Flemming dragged a clear opportunity wide. Haaland struck the post after the break, but City could not find a second goal to put the contest beyond doubt.
The defeat seals Burnley’s return to the Championship, their third relegation in five seasons. Managed by Scott Parker, they have collected just 20 points from 34 matches and sit well adrift of safety with four games left.
Burnley’s campaign follows a familiar pattern, as they continue to alternate between promotion and relegation in recent years. A promising start to the season faded quickly, with only one win in their last 25 league games confirming their drop.
Elsewhere, AFC Bournemouth saw their push for European qualification suffer a setback after a 2-2 draw with Leeds United.
Goals from Junior Kroupi and a response involving an own goal by James Hill left the match finely balanced before Rayan restored Bournemouth’s lead.
However, Sean Longstaff struck deep into stoppage time to earn Leeds a point, a result that strengthens their position above the relegation zone.
The draw moves Bournemouth into seventh place, just ahead of Chelsea, while Leeds extend their cushion over the bottom three as the season approaches its conclusion.
