Man United’s Cunha suffers training knock, doubt vs. Everton – sources
MANCHESTER, England – Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha is doubtful for Monday’s Premier League match against Everton after sustaining a minor injury in training, sources told the news agency on Sunday.
Cunha, 26, picked up what has been described internally as a “small knock” during Saturday’s training session and was subsequently withdrawn from a planned public appearance to switch on Christmas lights in Altrincham later that evening. Event organisers said the Brazil international pulled out for “medical reasons” following “an accident in training.”
Sources said the injury is not believed to be serious, and the club are still hopeful the former Wolverhampton Wanderers striker could be cleared to play when Everton visit Old Trafford. Tests will continue ahead of the match.
Manager Rúben Amorim will be eager to have Cunha available as United already remain without centre-forward Benjamin Sesko, who is continuing his recovery from a knee problem. Cunha has operated as a key part of Amorim’s attack since his £62.5 million transfer from Wolves in the summer, offering pressing work rate and link-up play. He has scored once in 11 appearances this season.
Cunha’s potential absence would leave United short of natural forwards as they attempt to maintain momentum heading into the festive period. The club views the Brazilian as a long-term piece of its attacking rebuild, and his fitness will be monitored closely in the coming days.
