City confirmed on Monday that Gvardiol has sustained a tibial fracture in his right leg and will undergo surgery in the coming days. While no official recovery timeline has been given, a return this season would require an unusually rapid rehabilitation period of under five months, placing serious doubt over his availability during the title run-in.
The match itself unfolded at a high tempo, with both sides pressing aggressively in front of a charged crowd. Gvardiol had looked composed in the opening exchanges, contributing to City’s build-up play before the moment that changed the tone of the afternoon.
The injury occurred when Gvardiol appeared to catch his foot in the turf during a challenge. Although the incident initially seemed minor, the defender was clearly uncomfortable and required assistance as he left the pitch, helped by City medical staff and Chelsea captain Reece James.
