Manchester United secure Toone and three others with contract extensions
Manchester United have moved decisively to secure the futures of Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Lisa Naalsund and Gabby George, triggering one-year contract extensions that will keep the quartet at the club until the summer of 2027.
All four players had been approaching the final six months of their deals and were eligible to negotiate pre-contract agreements with overseas clubs. United acted before the turn of the year, exercising existing options and removing any immediate uncertainty around key members of Marc Skinner’s squad.
The extensions were first reported last week and later confirmed by Skinner, who addressed the situation ahead of Saturday’s trip to Arsenal. The United head coach made it clear that the players are now committed for the next 18 months, reinforcing stability at a crucial point in the season.
For United, retaining Toone is particularly significant. A product of the club’s academy, she has been central to the team since the women’s side was reformed in 2018 and remains one of the most influential figures in the squad. Terland has also become a vital attacking presence since arriving in 2024, scoring 22 goals in 47 appearances, including 10 in 20 matches this season. Naalsund and George have provided important depth as United juggle domestic and European commitments following their first-ever qualification for the Women’s Champions League proper.
The timing of the extensions adds to a growing sense of momentum around United’s January business. The club have already strengthened the squad with the arrival of right-back Hanna Lundkvist from San Diego Wave and prolific striker Lea Schuller, who scored 103 goals in 180 appearances for Bayern Munich. Japan international Hinata Miyazawa has also committed her future until 2029, underlining a clear strategy to reinforce the squad both immediately and long term.
United have entered the new year with ambition, intent on competing across four fronts and avoiding the squad fatigue that has hampered them in previous campaigns. The extensions ensure continuity while new signings add quality and depth in key areas.
Despite the positive developments, Skinner has indicated that United’s January work is not complete. The manager has reiterated his desire to add further depth in specific positions, while also opening the door to longer-term negotiations with the newly extended players.
Skinner explained that option years are a standard part of United’s contract structure, designed to create space for more comprehensive discussions. Talks with Toone, Terland, Naalsund and George are ongoing behind the scenes as the club looks to secure their long-term futures beyond 2027.
However, questions remain elsewhere in the squad. Leah Galton, Rachel Williams and Hannah Blundell are still set to see their contracts expire this summer, with no extensions yet confirmed. Their situations raise the possibility of further movement before the window closes, particularly with reports suggesting Williams could depart for Leicester City.
For now, United’s priority has been clear. By locking in four key players and strengthening the squad early in the window, the club have sent a strong signal of intent ahead of a demanding second half of the season, both domestically and in Europe.
