Messi’s pre-final speech fuels speculation after Argentina loss

A video showing Lionel Messi’s dressing-room address to Argentina’s squad moments before the 2026 World Cup final has gone viral, drawing widespread but unconfirmed speculation about its unusually subdued tone.

Argentina lost the final 1-0 to Spain in extra time at MetLife Stadium, finishing as runners-up. The video, filmed shortly before the team walked out for kickoff, shows Messi urging teammates toward calm.

“Calm, let’s stay calm, lads, let’s think about playing, nothing else,” Messi is heard saying, before repeating a call to “forget about everything” and focus on the match ahead.

An unusual mood

Social media users noted that the squad appeared more serious than in earlier rounds of the tournament, with several describing the players’ expressions and body language as flat or subdued compared with Argentina’s mood throughout the rest of the competition. The observations prompted a range of interpretations online, from theories about internal tension to broader questions about what, if anything, had unsettled the squad beforehand.

Some social media commentary also referenced remarks Lionel Scaloni made after the final, in which the coach alluded to unspecified incidents before the match without elaborating, citing respect for the tournament. That comment has been cited online as a possible link to the mood shown in the video, though Scaloni did not specify what he meant.

An unconfirmed rumor

Separately, Argentine broadcaster Eduardo Feinmann relayed a rumor on his program suggesting that FBI agents were present at the stadium with the intent of arresting AFA president Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia before the match. Feinmann said the rumor had caused unease within the Argentine delegation and reached the players. He also claimed, without citing documentation, that Tapia faces legal investigations in both Argentina and the United States.

None of these claims have been confirmed by the AFA, by Tapia, or by any official source. Under the theory relayed by Feinmann, Messi’s call to “forget about everything” would have been a response to unease caused by the rumor rather than footballing concerns alone, but this explanation has not been verified by Messi, Scaloni or any member of the Argentina delegation.

Separate and unrelated claims alleging that the match result had been influenced or fixed have also circulated online. These claims have not been supported by any evidence or official source, and no governing body has indicated it is investigating the match result itself.

No official explanation

As of this writing, neither Messi, Scaloni, nor any other member of the Argentina delegation has publicly addressed what prompted the pep talk’s tone or confirmed any connection to the rumors circulating before kickoff. The AFA has not issued a statement addressing the speculation.

The video continues to circulate and generate discussion among fans, with the underlying cause of the squad’s mood before the final remaining unexplained by any party directly involved.
