Mykhailo Mudryk has joined Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan from Chelsea, handing the Ukraine international a fresh opportunity to restart his career under Roberto De Zerbi.
The 25-year-old completed the move on Tuesday and reunites with De Zerbi, the coach who worked with him during his breakthrough period at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Mudryk’s arrival gives Tottenham another attacking option following a busy summer transfer window, while offering the winger the chance to return to regular football after a lengthy period away from competitive action.
“It’s a great feeling,” Mudryk said after completing the move. “I can’t wait to start training and playing for the Club, and I’m so excited to be reunited with Roberto De Zerbi.”
De Zerbi reunion gives Mudryk a new opportunity
Mudryk’s previous work with De Zerbi was a significant factor in the move. The Italian coach oversaw the Ukrainian’s development at Shakhtar, where Mudryk emerged as one of the most highly regarded attacking talents in European football before moving to Chelsea in January 2023.
He made 73 appearances for Chelsea and scored 10 goals, but struggled to establish the level of consistency expected following his high-profile arrival from the Ukrainian club.
His career was then interrupted by anti-doping proceedings, which were resolved in July, allowing him to return to football.
Tottenham’s head coach believes the winger’s pace and ability in one-on-one situations can provide a different dimension to his squad.
“Having worked with Misha earlier in his career, I know exactly what he can bring to our team,” De Zerbi said.
“He has the quality to change a game with his speed and ability in one-vs-one situations, and is an exciting, attacking talent.”
De Zerbi added that Tottenham would need to help Mudryk rediscover his best form after his prolonged absence from regular competition.
“I will demand a lot from Misha and it is our job to help him find the best version of himself. If we do that then he can become a very important player for us.”
Mudryk looks to bring speed and creativity to Spurs
Mudryk said he hopes to make an impact at both ends of the pitch as he begins the next stage of his Premier League career.
“I’m a player who brings speed and creativity, and I want to help in both the offensive and defensive areas,” he said. “I want to make the fans excited.”
The move also gives Tottenham a player with considerable international experience. Mudryk has made 28 senior appearances for Ukraine and arrives with a reputation for direct running and pace, qualities that could suit De Zerbi’s attacking approach.
Tottenham strengthened their squad heavily during the summer and had been looking to add further depth in attacking areas before the transfer deadline.
Mudryk’s arrival came after the club missed out on Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye, who completed a move to Manchester City.
Fresh start after difficult Chelsea spell
For Mudryk, the loan represents an opportunity to rebuild momentum after a difficult period at Chelsea. His early promise following the move from Shakhtar was not consistently converted into decisive performances, and his time away from the game further interrupted his development.
The familiarity of working again with De Zerbi could now prove important as Tottenham attempt to help the winger regain his sharpness and confidence.
Spurs also strengthened their squad with the signing of central defender Tosin Adarabioyo from Chelsea, meaning two players made the move across London before the deadline.
Mudryk will wear the number 27 shirt at Tottenham as he begins a new chapter in north London.
The coming months will determine whether the reunion with De Zerbi can help one of European football’s most naturally gifted attacking players rediscover the form that first brought him widespread attention at Shakhtar Donetsk.
