Osimhen handed leadership role as Nigeria target AFCON glory
Victor Osimhen has been given added responsibility in the Super Eagles camp after Nigeria confirmed a reshuffle of their leadership structure ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Galatasaray striker, crowned Africa Footballer of the Year in 2023, has been named assistant captain and first-choice penalty taker. His promotion comes in the wake of William Troost-Ekong’s retirement from international football, a departure that has forced Nigeria to recalibrate their hierarchy just days before their opening match against Tanzania.
Ndidi takes the armband
Wilfred Ndidi, the Leicester City midfielder, has been officially confirmed as Nigeria’s new captain. He will lead the side in Morocco, supported by Osimhen and Paris FC winger Moses Simon, who retains his role as one of the assistant captains.
The decision reflects Osimhen’s growing influence within the squad. At 26, he is already Nigeria’s second-highest goalscorer of all time, trailing only Rashidi Yekini by six goals. His relentless work rate, visible passion for the national shirt and consistency at the highest level have made him a natural leader.
Troost-Ekong’s legacy
Troost-Ekong captained Nigeria to the final of the 2023 AFCON, where they lost to Ivory Coast, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. He also served as the team’s penalty taker and central figure in the dressing room.
His retirement earlier this month left a significant void, but the reshuffle has ensured continuity. Ndidi’s elevation to captain and Osimhen’s new responsibilities underline the squad’s determination to move forward with clarity and cohesion.
Senior figures remain vital
Alex Iwobi and Moses Simon continue to provide experience, both now into their tenth year of international service. Iwobi is Nigeria’s most capped player, while Simon has been a consistent presence across multiple tournaments.
Together with Osimhen, they form the backbone of a squad that carries heightened expectations following Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Bassey backs Fredrick return
Defender Calvin Bassey has spoken of his disappointment at losing centre-back Benjamin Fredrick to injury. The 19-year-old, who plays for Belgian side FCV Dender EH, sustained a knee problem in training that ruled him out of AFCON contention.
“I haven’t spoken to him, but it would be amazing for him to showcase his talent on this stage,” Bassey said. “I wish him a speedy recovery and I hope he will be back with us next year.”
Bassey also addressed the pressure surrounding the squad. “There will always be pressure on Nigeria. From ourselves, from the country. But we have to focus on what we need to do and remain positive.”
Focus on Tanzania opener
Nigeria begin their AFCON campaign on Tuesday evening against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium. Head coach Eric Chelle will hope the leadership changes translate into clarity and confidence on the pitch as the Super Eagles seek to end a 12-year wait for continental glory.
With Osimhen now entrusted as both deputy captain and penalty taker, the Galatasaray forward’s influence is set to be felt more than ever. For a nation desperate to reclaim its place at the summit of African football, the spotlight will inevitably fall on their talisman.
