Pep plans Ferguson, Wenger dinner for 250th win
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola celebrated his 250th Premier League win as his side secured a 1-0 victory against Brentford at the Gtech Stadium on Sunday. The milestone was achieved in just 349 matches, significantly faster than Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, who each took over 400 games to reach the same number of wins. Guardiola has committed to inviting both legendary managers to dinner in recognition of the achievement.
The decisive moment came early in the match when striker Erling Haaland scored his 18th goal of the season across club and international play. Eight minutes in, Haaland capitalized on a lofted pass from Josko Gvardiol, powering through Brentford defenders Sepp van den Berg and Nathan Collins before firing a shot beyond goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher. This goal completed Haaland’s scoring record at all but one Premier League stadium—Anfield remaining the sole ground where he has yet to score.
Guardiola reflected on the match, noting the difficulty of defending a narrow lead on the road. “Away when you are 1-0 up always you suffer,” he said. “In the first half, we were at our best and could have scored more to make it easier. We knew at half-time they would push more. Throw-ins, corners, free-kicks, you always suffer. But the game was well played.”
Manchester City’s victory came despite injury concerns as midfielder Rodri was forced to leave the field early due to a suspected hamstring problem while still recovering from a previous ACL injury. Guardiola remained cautious about the severity, stating, “It looks like a hamstring but we don’t know the damage yet.”
For Brentford, the defeat marked their first home loss of the Premier League campaign. Manager Keith Andrews acknowledged the challenge posed by Manchester City’s clinical efficiency. “We made it very uncomfortable in the second half,” Andrews said. “It was a game of very few chances and when you restrict them to very few chances you’re doing well. I’m not sure many other strikers in the world score that goal.”
Guardiola’s rapid accumulation of wins underscores Manchester City’s continued dominance in English football and reflects the manager’s ability to sustain top-tier results over multiple seasons. The upcoming dinner with Ferguson and Wenger will symbolize his integration into the elite managerial cadre of Premier League history as he aims for continued success in the coming years.
