Real Madrid apologise for Jota tribute video mixup

MADRID, Spain – Real Madrid issued a formal apology on Sunday after displaying a photo of the wrong player during a tribute video honoring Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who died in a car accident in Spain in July. The club acknowledged an editing mistake after an image of Elche midfielder André da Silva was shown in place of Silva during Madrid’s general assembly.

Club president Florentino Pérez addressed the error directly, describing it as an unintended oversight in the production process. “There was an error in the institutional video,” Pérez said. “We apologize, it was a human error.”

The tribute had been prepared as part of the club’s annual assembly, which included presentations on sporting and institutional matters. Madrid officials said the production team is reviewing its internal protocols to prevent similar incidents in future commemorative materials.

The mix-up comes as Madrid continues its strong start to the LaLiga campaign. The league leaders drew 2-2 away at Elche later on Sunday, salvaging a point through a late strike from Jude Bellingham. The result kept Madrid one point clear of Barcelona at the top of the table.

The incident is expected to remain an internal matter, but the club’s swift acknowledgment reflects its intention to maintain accuracy in its public communications, especially in sensitive contexts involving player tributes and memorials.
