Rodrygo Strikes Late as Real Madrid Edge Alaves to Halt Losing Run

Real Madrid returned to winning ways in LaLiga with a narrow 2-1 victory over Deportivo Alaves in Vitoria-Gasteiz, ending a run of two consecutive defeats and keeping pace with leaders Barcelona. Rodrygo’s decisive second-half strike ensured Xabi Alonso’s side remain second in the table, four points behind the Catalans.

Madrid had started brightly and took the lead in the 24th minute through Kylian Mbappé, who latched onto Jude Bellingham’s long pass before cutting inside and unleashing a thunderous shot into the top corner. Despite the early breakthrough, Alaves grew into the game, spurred on by a sold-out Mendizorrotza crowd, and tested Madrid’s makeshift defence that featured 19-year-old debutant Victor Valdepeñas at left back.

The hosts were rewarded in the 68th minute when substitute Carlos Vicente timed his run perfectly to meet Antonio Blanco’s long ball, surging clear of the defence before finishing emphatically into the top corner. Initially flagged offside, the goal was awarded after a VAR review.

Madrid responded swiftly, restoring their lead just eight minutes later. Vinícius Jr drove past his marker on the left flank and delivered a low cross into the box, where Rodrygo slid in to convert from close range. The Brazilian’s strike proved decisive, sealing three points for Los Blancos.

Manager Xabi Alonso admitted his side lost control after their strong start but praised their resilience: “We started well and took the lead, but then we lost control… The team continued to fight hard, battling it out in a difficult stadium against a very intense opponent. That second goal gave us the three points and we’re leaving here very happy.”

The win lifts Real to 39 points, four behind Barcelona, while Alaves remain 12th on 18 points. For Alonso, the result provides much-needed relief after a difficult run, though the performance highlighted both Madrid’s attacking quality and defensive vulnerabilities.
