Sarri Undergoes Heart Procedure as Lazio Confirm Positive Recovery
Maurizio Sarri has undergone a minor heart procedure after being diagnosed with atrial fibrillation, with Lazio confirming the surgery was successful and the coach is expected to return to work in the coming days.
The Italian manager required medical intervention after tests revealed a heart rhythm disorder, prompting immediate action and a brief pause in his day-to-day duties with the Serie A side.
Lazio confirmed Sarri underwent transcatheter ablation surgery at the Policlinico Tor Vergata in Rome, with the procedure carried out by Professor Andrea Natale. The club stated the operation was completed successfully and that Sarri is recovering well under medical supervision.
The diagnosis comes at a demanding moment in Lazio’s season. The club currently sits eighth in Serie A, nine points adrift of fourth place and the final Champions League qualification spot, as pressure builds around their league form.
Sarri is in his second spell at Lazio, having returned to the club in the summer. During his first tenure, he guided the Biancocelesti to a fifth-place finish in 2021 to 22 and an impressive second-place finish the following season. His managerial pedigree also includes a Serie A title with Juventus in 2019–20 and Europa League success with Chelsea in 2018–19.
Lazio’s recent run has been tense both on and off the pitch. Draws against Cremonese and Udinese have slowed momentum, while frustration has grown over refereeing decisions and VAR interventions in key moments.
Following the draw with Udinese, the club released a strongly worded statement criticizing what they described as repeated and difficult-to-understand errors, claiming the decisions were having a direct impact on results and the integrity of the competition.
The situation escalated further when Lazio published a video montage on social media highlighting contentious refereeing calls, before Sarri declined to speak to the media as the club enforced a temporary media blackout.
Despite the surrounding noise, Lazio insists Sarri’s recovery remains the priority. The club confirmed their head coach will resume regular management duties shortly, offering reassurance at a critical stage of the campaign as Lazio looks to stabilize their season and push back toward the European places.
