Georgios Donis has been named the new head coach of Saudi Arabia national football team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation confirmed on Thursday.
The Greek coach replaces Herve Renard, who was dismissed earlier this month, just weeks before the team begins its World Cup campaign.
The federation said Donis has signed a contract that will run until July 2027, giving him the task of leading Saudi Arabia through the tournament and beyond.
The 56-year-old brings experience from both Europe and the Middle East. He has managed top clubs in Greece, including AEK Athens and Panathinaikos, and has also worked in Saudi Arabia’s domestic league.
Donis most recently coached Al Khaleej, joining the club in 2024 before making the move to the national team.
He takes charge of a side that secured qualification under Renard, marking Saudi Arabia’s seventh appearance at the World Cup and their third in a row.
Saudi Arabia will compete in Group H, where they are set to face Spain national football team, Uruguay national football team and Cape Verde national football team.
The tournament will run from June 11 to July 19, with Saudi Arabia opening their campaign against Uruguay on June 15.
