Second-division match in Spain abandoned after fan’s death
MADRID – A Spanish second-division match between AD Ceuta and UD Almería was abandoned on Sunday after a supporter suffered a fatal medical emergency in the stands.
Spanish media reported that the deceased was a 73-year-old Ceuta fan who fell ill early in the first half. Medical personnel were called to assist around the 20th minute, prompting referee José Luis Guzmán to temporarily halt play.
After a delay of roughly ten minutes, the match resumed once the supporter had been taken from the stands on a stretcher. However, the league later confirmed the fan’s death during halftime, after which officials decided to abandon the fixture.
In a brief statement, LaLiga expressed its condolences to the fan’s family and the Ceuta community. Both clubs also issued messages of sympathy on social media.
A new date for the fixture has yet to be confirmed by the Spanish league.
