Semenyo Shines as Bournemouth Sink Struggling Southampton 3-1

Antoine Semenyo played a crucial role in Bournemouth’s dominant 3-1 victory over struggling Southampton, adding to the Saints’ early-season woes in the Premier League at Vitality Stadium.

Evanilson, Bournemouth’s record signing, opened the scoring with a well-timed volley, marking his first goal in English football. Shortly after, a bit of luck saw Dango Ouattara double the lead. Semenyo, who was heavily involved in both of these plays, then delivered a brilliant third goal, rifling the ball into the bottom corner in the 39th minute, marking his third strike of the season.

Although Taylor Harwood-Bellis managed to pull one back for Southampton with a header, a second-half comeback never seemed likely for the Saints.

This heavy defeat not only gave Bournemouth local bragging rights but also left Southampton languishing with just one point from six matches. The loss extended their miserable winless streak in the top flight to 19 games, a run dating back to the previous season, which saw them relegated.

Russell Martin’s team came into the match looking to bounce back from a frustrating last-minute draw against Ipswich. They showed some early promise, with Maxwel Cornet’s shot being blocked and former Bournemouth player Ryan Fraser forcing a simple save from Kepa Arrizabalaga. However, their hope quickly faded as Bournemouth took control.

Bournemouth’s breakthrough came in the 17th minute when Semenyo was fouled by Flynn Downes deep in Southampton’s half. A quick free-kick from Marcus Tavernier found Evanilson, who slotted the ball into the bottom corner. Moments later, Semenyo’s smart play set up a chance for Lewis Cook, whose shot deflected off Ouattara to beat goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

Semenyo then grabbed the spotlight once again, taking control of the ball 30 meters out, weaving past Lesley Ugochukwu twice, and firing a precise, low shot into the far corner of the net.

The Cherries held on comfortably to bounce back from losses to Chelsea and Liverpool, while Southampton’s struggles continued, with a tough trip to Arsenal looming before the international break.
