Senegal Seal Top Spot With Victory Over Benin
Senegal confirmed their place as Group B winners at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-0 win over Benin in Tangier. The Lions of Teranga produced a composed display to finish with two wins from three matches, while Benin also progressed as one of the best third-placed teams.
Seck Breaks the Deadlock
After a cagey opening, Senegal struck five minutes before half-time. Krepin Diatta delivered a precise cross from a set piece, and Abdoulaye Seck powered home a header. The goal stood after a lengthy VAR check for handball, giving Senegal the breakthrough they had been searching for.
Diallo Doubles the Lead
Senegal began the second half with greater confidence. Abdou Diallo went close with a curling effort before finding the net soon after. Sadio Mané created the chance with a dazzling run down the wing, beating three defenders before squaring for Diallo to score his ninth international goal.
Koulibaly Sent Off, Ndiaye Adds Third
The only setback for Senegal came in the 71st minute when captain Kalidou Koulibaly was dismissed following a VAR review for a foul on the Achilles. Despite being reduced to ten men, Senegal added a third late on as Cherif Ndiaye finished calmly to secure the result.
What It Means
Senegal advance as group winners and will face one of the best third-placed sides in the last 16, a draw that should favour Pape Thiaw’s team. Benin, despite the defeat, also progress but face a tougher challenge in the knockout stage.
