Borussia Dortmund have sacked coach Nuri Sahin, the German football team announced on Wednesday, after Tuesday’s unexpected 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League, extending their streak of losses to four matches across all tournaments.
“Borussia Dortmund have terminated head coach Nuri Sahin’s contract with immediate effect following an internal review of recent sporting outcomes,” stated the club in an announcement.
The Ruhr district side, last season’s Champions League runners-up, let in two goals within two minutes during the second half against the Italians, despite taking an early 15th-minute lead.
They have also been beaten in all three domestic league fixtures in 2025, slipping to 10th position in the Bundesliga and jeopardizing their qualification for next year’s elite European club tournament.
“After four consecutive defeats and only one victory in the past nine fixtures… we have regrettably lost confidence in our ability to achieve our sporting objectives under the current arrangement,” Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken mentioned in the statement.
“This resolution is personally painful for me, but it became inevitable following the match in Bologna.”
Dortmund stated that their current Under-19 manager, Mike Tullberg, would oversee their league encounter against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Sahin, 36, departs from the team just over six months after being hired to succeed Edin Terzic as the head coach.
The Germany-born ex-Turkey international previously played in both the youth and senior squads of the club. He became an assistant manager at Dortmund in 2024 following a two-year managerial tenure at Turkey’s Antalyaspor. He had signed an agreement lasting until 2027.
